These days, every company has some kind of green strategy – but how real are these strategies? How many of them are really committed to a less polluted, energy-saving, healthy, sustainable future – and how many are just paying lip-service to the latest trend? I suspect many consumers are suffering from “green fatigue”, and will scream if they hear another “Save The Planet” message. However, perhaps we should all take greenhouse gas emissions more seriously. A recent, admittedly speculative, study by NASA’s Planetary Science Division suggests that “extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth’s atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control, and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat”. “Green” aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. “These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets,” the authors write. So next time you leave your car engine running while you’re parked, or set your aircon at 22 degrees, be careful – little green men could be watching you…
