Singapore, 4th December 2010 – The 5th Centaurs International Mini and Youth Rugby Tournament (CIMYRT), an international rugby tournament catered for children and youths aged ten to eighteen will be played at the Singapore Polo Club on the 4th and 5th of December.
Building on the success of the tournament last year, the 2010 tournament will feature a record breaking 2500 players from 183 teams. The players entered across all competitions, represent 41 schools and 7 countries in total. The numbers compare favourably with a 24% increase in participation for the event compared to 2009.
“Rugby as a team game instills discipline, confidence and courage. These skills are vital life long virtues that influence people’s success and careers”, Tim Lambert, Managing Director, Centaurs Group.
The highlight of the weekend is the Cup of Nations, where players can choose to represent 12 different nations other than their country of origin. The Cup of Nations has proven to be instrumental in bringing communities together, empowering children and teaching crucial life skills like teamwork, self-confidence and motivation to succeed.
Through this event, youths are given the opportunity to broaden their social and cultural landscapes by communicating with their team mates and opponents from countries such as Australia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Indonesia just to name a few.
“The friendships on and off the field will be made for a lifetime and memories forever. The enjoyment, satisfaction and knowledge gleaned from such events contribute to not only their rugby progress but more importantly to the understanding and development of their own abilities” said Lambert.
Sponsored by Norton Rose and supported by The Singapore Rugby Union and Singapore Sports Council, CIMYRT welcomes 41 teams from 17 local schools and clubs. “The sport of rugby is definitely making an impact and increasing in popularity among young people here in Singapore. We hope that this unique
event will be a step forward to help channel positive energy and encourage lateral thinking amongst young Singaporeans especially after the recent reports in teenage violence,” said Lambert.
